ABA stands for Applied Behavioural Analysis which refers to the application of evidence based behavioural principals to produce behaviour change. It is the application of these procedures within the child’s environment which lead to behaviour change.  This behaviour change is brought about through reinforcement (strengthening behaviour through delivery of something pleasant that the child enjoys, such as a toy or praise).

Applied refers to the practical nature of ABA, rather than it being laboratory-based or philosophical. Each behaviour identified to change is socially relevant or important to the child and his/her family. Behaviour Analysis means to understand what leads to (or doesn't lead to) new skills and maintains existing ones. Children typically learn a great deal from the environment, by being curious and looking around. Children with diagnosed disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Global Developmental Delay may not learn in this manner. ABA is all about setting up the environment to enable children to learn in their own natural way by modifying how we teach, and the environment in which we teach.
